Problem -
You have been brought in as a consultant to design a temporary secure data and voice link between Sheffield Railway Station and a temporary site about 1.5 km away. Maps in the Appendix provide more detail and the sites are marked on the maps.
It has been suggested that you may be able to achieve the link using a 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi based system with Voice over IP (VOIP) to provide the voice communications. Security of the link has not been discussed and your suggestions for security are needed.
You have available to you the buildings at the Sheffield Station to mount antennas on (you will need to estimate their height) and a 15m mast mounted on a mobile trailer for use at the maintenance site.
Your Task -
Your task is to write a report for your client that fully specifies the system. This must include:
- equipment to be used (exact type and model numbers are needed) for the antennas, access points, cables etc.
- the designed data rate.
- calculations on received signal levels to prove that they will be adequate to achieve the data rate.
- what security schemes are to be implemented to avoid hacking.
- you must provide all the calculations to support your design and a full justification for all decisions and choices made
- the report must be of a style appropriate for a consultant reporting back to his/her client.
