The timber bridge shown in Photograph 1 and Photograph 2 below shows clear signs of deterioration in different elements of the bridge. Your task is to identify three different forms of deterioration that had already taken place or that may take place in the bridge elements.

The brick façade in the multi-storey residential tower in Photos (3-6) below was inspected and a number of photographs taken for cracking in the bricks of the façade. The building was built in 1960s and consists of reinforced concrete floors and columns as the main load bearing structural frame and is clad in some areas with wire cut clay brick façade. The cracks in the brick façade were mainly concentrated along a line joining the concrete balustrades of the balconies as shown in the photographs. Your task is to analyse the photographs and come up with an explanation for the cracking, bulging and distortion of the brick unit. Highlight the main characteristic of clay bricks that is responsible for the symptoms for seen in the photographs.
