You will need to choose a company that has been listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange for at least the last 5 years, is widely traded, trades at a price above $5, and has paid dividends consistently over the last 5 years. Please use the template named "Part A Template" to submit your company choice. The full name of the company and the industry it pertains is required. Please write a brief description about the company you chose and also talk about how it meets the conditions just mentioned.
To find your company go to the Toronto Stock Exchange website, and in the drop down menu below "ABOUT TMX GROUP" choose "Listed Company Directory". Under the "Currently Listed Companies", choose the letter that your last name begins with and you will get a list of companies starting with that letter (the list may be several pages long). Select a company that has a one to three letter symbol and has "T" for the exchange. You will then need to check to see if the company is suitable for the project.
Click on the company name and you will be taken to an information page about the company. On the top left will be a price chart. If the scale number on the right of the chart is 5 or less, or if the line on the chart is incomplete, the company is unsuitable and you will need to go back and try another company. If the company looks ok so far, your next step is to click on "charting". Change the time frame to 5 years and the frequency to monthly and then click on "Draw Chart". Once on the chart page, check to make sure:
- Price data are available for the five years
- Price stays above $5 per share for most or all of the five years
- Dividends (indicated by a green square with a D inside) are paid throughout the period (usually there will be 20 quarterly dividends over 5 years)
If the above criteria are met, then you have found a suitable company and can use it for your project. Before you leave the chart page, you might also want to check to see if there were any stock splits (indicated by an olive coloured circle with an S inside). If you are unable to find a suitable company starting with the first letter of your last name (there are no suitable companies starting with J, K, Q, V, X, Y, or Z), then try the second letter of your last name. It is up to you to make sure that your company fits all of the requirements. If your company does not fit all the requirements, you will not be able to complete all of the subsequent parts of the project.
