You will develop a set of design criteria and form a

Task -

Task 2a (ii) requires you to do a little more research and share information with your team members. In this task you will build on the information collected in Task 2a(i) and you will collect more information on problem identification and technical solutions, evaluate a series of design solutions and prepare a report. You will develop a set of design criteria and form a template of three to five measurable design requirements and test a minimum of two design options against these requirements. The focus article should be included in this task.

The following structure is required for your preliminary report:

Title Page - meaningful and attention grabbing

Introduction

  • Background information: consider location, community, project, ethics, humanitarian engineering and EWB
  • Purpose of the report
  • Preview of what is in the report

Problem Definition

  • Consider the current state of the community, current and future problems, your role as engineers and why a solution is important.
  • Analyse what are the main cultural, economic, environmental and social issues

Technical Review of Options

  • Select a design area and justify it
  • Briefly consider - current solutions, existing technologies, modifications to existing technologies, innovative or original solutions, what is happening in other locations. Look at academic articles and 'Patents as well as the EWB website.

Design Assessment Criteria

  • Determine three to five measurable design assessment criteria to determine your preferred solution.
  • Consider - criteria such as cost, strength, sustainability, ethics, technical functionality, environmental impact or cultural appropriateness etc.

Design Selection

  • Select a minimum of two designs and compare them based on your design assessment criteria. This should be displayed graphically.
  • Consider - community involvement, community acceptance and communication of your ideas.
  • Indicate why the design requirement is important and support your claim with evidence.

Conclusion

  • Restate your purpose and summarise your findings

Design Recommendation

  • Make recommendations based on your findings. Justify the priority of these recommendations.
  • Consider - time, cost, community importance etc. when justifying your recommendations.

Format and Presentation

  • Correct report structure and presentation using the UTS style guide. You may select your own meaningful title, headings and sub-headings
  • Include - in-text citations and referencing of a minimum of four sources in UTS Harvard style (including the focus reading), evidence of synthesis, topic sentences, correctly labelled graphics, grammar and Australian spelling check.
  • Appendix - to include evidence of the use of REFWORKS and 1 page from each of any four sources showing active reading.

Task 2b this task requires you to orally present the progress of your research to date and how it will be useful in the development of Task 2a (i) and (ii) and the EWB Challenge report. It will discuss the sources found so far and identify gaps for your future research. Your presentation should take 3 minutes.

On completion of these sub-tasks, you should have the information required to contribute to your team discussions and help in the decision-making and problem solving processes. These tasks will provide material for the completion of the first section of your written team report.
