Position Paper
Select a controversial current issue in the news-approval from instructor required. This assignment challenges students to develop a position and examine the position from multiple viewpoints. As advocates for clients and agents of social change, students will need to know and be able to effectively articulate positions on relevant issues. This position paper provides students with the opportunity to develop their writing, analysis and advocacy skills. Papers will be evaluated based on content (argument presented) and writing style (organization, clarity, grammar, punctuation, etc.). All references needs to be current (no more than five years old).
1. Provide an introduction which prepares the reader for the topic areas that will be explored in the paper.
2. Briefly describe the issue and specify why the issue is controversial.
3. Identify the key stakeholders involved.
4. Clearly describe your personal position on the issue and your rationale for holding this position.
5. Clearly describe the position of those who are in favor of and? those who oppose the issue.
Get creative in how you determine support and opposition. Support these positions with evidence, i.e., evidence from the readings (from this course or other courses), empirical research (literature review) and/ or from media sources (keeping in mind that media often take positions on these issues).
6. Clearly describe the social work profession's position on the issue, informed by the NASW Code of Ethics. The NASW does take a stand on many issues (or related issues), and this information should be presented in the paper. Note which standard is most associated with the issue.
7. Discuss the similarities, differences and intersections among your personal position, those who support and oppose the position, and the social work profession's position.
