You are in an isolated site with only a hardness testing machine, a vice, and some rudimentary tools. You have a length of steel of about 20 × 20 mm section that must be used to urgently replace a broken member. What tests can you perform to ensure that the steel will be adequate?
FI with a set of suitably graded files of different hardnesses would be able to gauge the hardness fairly accurately in the absence of a hardness machine, but of course, accurate portable hardness testers are now easily available.
