Assignment:
You are to complete a lab report that will demonstrate your understanding of the single crystal diffraction with a four-circle x-ray diffractometer. This report should include a brief discussion of the four-circle x-ray diffraction method (both theory and practical aspects of recording the diffraction pattern). Follow the procedure above and address the questions given in bold text.
Additionally, draw a stereographic projection for (001)-and (101)-oriented single crystal SrTiO3 including only the {100}, {110}, and {111} poles and discuss generally how the orientation affects diffraction with a four-circle x-ray diffractometer-for example, what are some reflections that are inaccessible using the techniques in this lab? Consider the stereographic projection for the (101)-oriented crystal, how many peaks would you expect to see in an in-plane (001) Φ scan?
Now consider that the SrTiO3-crystal is cooled below 105K and undergoes a phase transition to a tetragonal crystal structure with lattice parameters a=b=3.897Å, c = 3.903Å. How does the (001) stereographic projection compare to the (100) stereographic projection at this temperature and how would this affect your in-plane Φ scan of the (101) plane as seen in step 9 for both (001) and (100) crystal orientations (i.e. how many peaks and why)?
