Research: You must spend time finding 10 different kinetic concepts. These can be existing products, or features on products, that provide you Inspiration or ideas for your design. (The products should be specific, not general. For example, the Spoiler on a Ducati Race car and how it works is Specific, whereas "Ducati Race Cars" is too general.) For each concept, you must provide at minimum two sentences defining the statement the product conveys, and the function that the product is doing. Include a thumbnail picture with your concepts. These are meant to provide inspiration for you to pursue your own design.
Brainstorming: You are required to brainstorm 50 ideas for your project. You are encouraged to ask your colleagues and friends to participate in this session with you. A good group size is four people and only one of those people may come from this class. This is not an individual brainstorm - you must do this with other people, and you must include the names of the people who brainstormed with you when you turn this in.
Design statement: You must provide five adjectives that describe your design intent. Then you can explain the message or spirit your product will embody in a short paragraph. The more specific this statements the easier the design becomes. (Pure functionality will not be accepted -all of us can manufacture a purely functional pencil holder in very little time.)
Sketches: You will be req uired to turn in sketches of th ree idea s. These sketches must be refined enough to convey important details, and em body you design statement. Spend some time doing these sketches - they will be graded on the quality of the sketching. (Individual Assignment)
Decision Matrix: Somewhere in this project you must use two decision matrices with at least three design choices and five design parameters. These will be turned in with the final report. Ma ke sure you explain you r criteria and the results of your decision mat rix.
Prototypes: You will be required to make two prototypes that satisfy at least two different objectives. You are required to identify the purpose of the prototype and show that the prototype a nswered the question you were asking.
CAD drawing: You will be requi red to turn in an exploded view/assembly CAD drawing so that someone could make your assembly.
Materials list/Build Plan: You must complete a materials list and build plan. The materials list will document all the materials you will use for the construction, and the build plan will be a step by step instruction of how to manufacture your object. Include th is in your final report.
Final Product: We will have a gallery style presentation for our final products. Students will not have time to individually present products, however you must design your presentations which includes a printed one-page description of your product.
Final Report: Your final report is a compendium of all the items above. The report should include a Problem Statement, and a concluding Reflection of what you have learned and how you may apply these skills in the future. An appendix is required with all supporting documentation fie brainstorming, sketches, et c).PI ease remember that a report is formatted in a coherent fashion. It is not simply all of your deliverables stapled together. You must also complete two additional items as part of your final report:
1) A critique of your partner's contribution. This is meant to help facilitate constructive team dialogue.
2) A work breakdown of who did what. Make sure you start keeping a time sheet right from the start.
