Topic 1:
Consider the following cases.

Case 1: Ms. X is a model employee, who has been working hard at her job, receiving consistently positive evaluations and exceeding expectations. Because of this, Ms. X is one of the candidates up for a promotion. She is in need of the raise that comes with the new job, as the current job does not pay enough money for her to make ends meet. During the interview, her boss openly states that she will not get the promotion unless she agrees to go out on a date with her boss.

Case 2: Mr. G is an employee at the local office. He is a well-liked member of the staff, who does his job well and meets expectations. He and his significant other are about to have a child. Because of the upcoming increase in living expenses, Mr. G is in need of a pay increase. He asks his boss for a raise. The boss responds that the only way for Mr. G to get a raise is to go out on a date with the boss. Furthermore, if Mr. G refuses, the boss will lie and report that Mr. G tried to use blackmail to get a raise. This will result in Mr. G getting fired from his job.

Keeping Mappes' argument in mind, how do you think he would evaluate the first case? How would he evaluate the second case? Do you agree with Mappes' conclusion? Why or why not?

In your essay, make sure you explain Mappes' argument in its entirety. Make sure to give clear and specific reasons as to why you think he would be either for or against each case. When discussing whether you agree or not, try your best to present a unique and detailed argument for your position.

In your essay, make sure to explain Spafford's argument in its entirety. Also, give clear and specific reasons for why you think he would be either for or against the case. Lastly, when discussing whether you agree or not, try your best to present a unique and detailed argument for your position.

Format:

  • Double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman
  • 5-6 full pages
  • Please single space the heading of your paper
  • Outside research is not required. However, if you decide to add additional sources to your paper, please cite them using MLA format.

Points to Consider:

  • Choose only one of the two topics provided.
  • Try to answer the questions in the order they are provided. Provide your explanation of the argument first, then provide your argument/explanation for how and why you think the philosopher in question would evaluate the scenario provided, followed by your evaluation.
  • Try to keep your explanation of the theory detailed
  • HOWEVER DO NOT JUST PROVIDE A SUMMARY OF THE THEORY, a paper that does not try to answer all of the questions asked in the topic will receive at best half credit
  • Keep in mind that these questions might be challenging, and it might not be immediately clear how to evaluate and respond to them. You might even think there is no obviously clear 'right' or 'wrong' answer. This is intentional, the purpose of the exercise is designed to make you think it through carefully. Do not get discouraged, the purpose of this essay is to demonstrate your understanding of the theories, and your ability to think critically by explaining how they can be used to explain your decision.
  • When providing analysis of whether you agree with the individual or not, provide a detailed argument as to why you think they are right and/or wrong. Provide reasons, counterarguments, and counterexamples. DO NOT just state that the person is wrong because they agree with your intuition and/or beliefs.
