Benzodiazepines are a type of medication prescribed to individuals who struggle mainly with anxiety and insomnia. There are many misconceptions about the safety of consuming benzodiazepines, and the subjective effects of the medication often lead to misuse and a dependency on the medication. Many individuals who take benzodiazepines believe that taking the medication is the only way they can relax, make friends, have intimate relationships, or be happy. You are a substance abuse counselor seeing Michael, a 33-year-old new client who is struggling with anxiety. He was referred to you by his psychiatrist because he was misusing his benzodiazepine prescription. His psychiatrist switched him to an SSRI antidepressant meant to help his anxiety, but the psychiatrist would also like Michael to learn coping skills and to discuss his stressors, which the psychiatrist thinks could be the underlying cause to his anxiety. Michael shares with you that he has never had a serious girlfriend. He took more of his benzodiazepines when interacting with women because he gets intimidated and nervous. With benzodiazepines, he felt he could relax and have a good time. He said that without his benzodiazepine, he avoids going out, which makes him feel isolated. Michael tells you that his psychiatrist does not know, but he has started drinking alcohol because it gives him an effect similar to what the benzodiazepine gave him.
