Highlands Health Care System, Inc. (HHCS) is a private, non-profit health care network serving a multi-county area of Northeast Mississippi where there is a growing aging population. HHCS has been in operation since 1952.

It provides a large acute-care hospital; a Heart and Vascular Center, an acute inpatient Rehabilitative Center; Neurosciences and Stroke Center; Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology Lab; a specialty pediatric clinic; Highland Hills Village Retirement Community; Home Health Care/Hospice Services and Hospice House; Outpatient Services and Wellness Center and, numerous community outreach programs. HHCS is on the cutting edge of medicine and utilizes advanced technologies.

Recently, Brownstone Oncology (established 2002) received a large grant (9.4 million) to extend their services to their cancer patients at all stages of care. Brownstone is within half a mile of HHCS.

The management teams of both organizations are separately revisiting their strategic plans.

Please answer the following questions.

1. Write out an example of what might be a good statement to describe HHCS mission?

7. List three areas of service that HHCS provides that could be linked directly to the services or to stages in the process of care that Brownstone provides or likely to provide in the future.

8. As they were completing a SWOT analysis, Brownstone Oncology got this response from an interview: "Many patients express grave fears that their multiple doctors are not communicating [efficiently], and, in fact, we are not! It seems like we cannot work together." Other than just stating "improve physician communication", how might Brownstone begin to address this internal problem? Two brief ideas would adequate.

9. Identify three strategic alternatives that may be beneficial to Brownstone Oncology's development plan.

10. Based on the information provided, would you say that the two health care organizations are in competition, not in competition, or are complementary? Do you think HHCS holds any competitive advantage or disadvantage in relation to Brownstone Oncology? Explain your answer.
