Problem: Last week we wrapped up our discussions of functionalism and some of the main influencers in the area. Reviewing Darwin and Galton and the seminal work they did, we focused a bit more on G. Stanley Hall and the impact he had on functionalism and psychology in general. Dewey's contribution of the reflex arc theory is most recognizable as it relates to functionalism, but he also had a great impact on education by applying the idea of doing (active learning) rather than teaching by authoritarian methods and rote learning. One of the major impacts of Darwin's evolution theory was the idea that there exists great variability in the genetic makeup of every individual human or animal. Such variability enables the adaptability of a species such that at least some individuals born with certain characteristics can better survive the changing environment. The subsequent propagation of these individuals' genes drives the species to evolve. For participation credit, discuss where you see the impact of Darwin's theory of evolution today.
