The alignment (Zara) and re-alignment (Harrah) framework are largely used to increase efficiency and effectiveness of current operations but with an eye towards creating hard to imitate differentiators. Use of Upstream thinking (CVS) also is largely geared towards the same. Of course all use analytics to create and sustain competitive business advantage. However, as is clear from Oakland Athletics and Netflix, analytics can also be used in deploying the three frameworks to initiate business model innovation: doing what you were doing before differently and in the process creating sustainable business advantage.
