Respond to the following. A good example of budgetary consideration can be seen in the realm of privatization of prisons. One of the concerns raised is the political influences involved and how this may impact the prison populations. What we have seen is the organizations that run this facility have hired lobbyists that seek legislation that benefits their organizations. This is not that unusual as nearly all large-scale organizations are involved in the process to some degree. What is different or potentially concerning here is that these influences may in fact have the ability to elevate the penalties for criminal behavior. Essentially, the longer people are in prison or the more people are arrested the more profit that can be extracted in the process. Questions can be raised on the legitimacy of this and the costs of personal freedoms. The penalties and consequences of criminal activity should be determined by a society in a way that is in the best interest of society.
