Cynthia, As a fellow teacher, I completely agree that we are responsible for informing students of the rules. And I also agree that intentional plagiarism should be delineated from the unintentional practice. As a faculty member, I appreciate software that can screen papers for students and faculty. I have actually found that students have learned a great deal when getting this feedback as they learn what they are doing right and wrong when they have not committed an egregious or intentional act of plagiarism. We can share the rules and the books but when they actually can view the results on their own work, I believe there is a greater impact to learning.
In the article by Kucuktepe (2014), attitudes about cheating were studied. There was a wide range of how the students perceived cheating, from classmates helping each other to immoral behavior. The article also discussed the reasons, again with a wide spread variety ranging from lack of preparation, lack of knowledge, helping others, to fear of bad grades.
As educators, we need to continue to teach but also support our students in accomplishing the necessary work on their own.Kucuktepe, S.E. (2014). College students' cheating behaviors. Social behavior and personality. 42(Suppl.), S101-S111.https://dx.doi.org/10.2224/sbp.2014.42.0.S1
