Problem
i. In the aftermath of mass shootings carried out with so-called assault weapons, victims and their families sometimes call for a ban on these military-style firearms. Suppose you are an elected official and have to make a public statement in response to a local advocacy groups push for an assault-weapon ban after a mass shooting. How will you advocate for evidence- based gun policies that make sense in light of the information about gun violence, while respecting the trauma and serious emotional toll these attacks take on people? Write a speech or series of points you would make.
ii. Take the previous scenario and now imagine that the advocacy group is pushing for policies that would make guns more prevalent, such as arming teachers and relaxing regulations on concealed carry. Craft a rational, evidence-based response to this proposal.
