Write a short note on fundamental properties of measurement.
Answer
There are four primary fundamental properties of measurement: assignment, distance, order and origin. Assignment property is also referred as category or description property. It refers to researcher's employment of unique descriptors or labels to recognize every object within a set. Second measurement order property, scale property refers to relative magnitude between descriptors. Distance property refers to a measurement scheme where exact difference between each of descriptors is expressed in absolute. Origin property is a measurement scheme wherein exists a unique starting point in a set of scale points. For the most part, origin property refers to a numbering system where zero is displayed or referenced starting point in the set of possible responses. Every scaling property builds on the previous one. For instance, a scale that includes order property would have assignment property built in. In the same way, a scale that possesses distance property would have assignment and order property both. An origin property based scale would have all assignment, origin and distance properties included in itself.
