Instructions
After selecting a topic (see below), you must write a "science news article" in the style of New Scientist or Scientific American. An example of an article Is posted on eClass. The article should explain the current research being done, based on 2-3 main primary research articles, and place the research in the broader context of the specific field and of reproduction more generally. It should be targeted to a scientifically literature, educated, general audience. This can be more difficult than It sounds since you must convey the Information clearly and concisely while maintaining scientific accuracy and an effective level of engagement In effect, you are trying to tell a story, a narrative about the science being done.
Your "science news article" must include the following:
• Introduction to the general topic/area.
• Why is this area of interest? Why are people studying this?
• What are the current questions In field? What questions are being addressed In your 2-3 primary articles?
• How were the questions addressed? That is. what methods and approaches were used?
o You should very briefly outline the methods in one or two sentences, but do not describe the details of each technique.
• What are the general findings from your 2-3 primary articles?
• What are the general conclusions of your 2-3 papers?
• What is the significance of the findings and how do they fit Into the broader context of reproductive biology?
• You must indude one question that is raised by the paper and one question that you now have after reading the paper. These should be built into the discussion/conclusion and not tacked on separately at the end of your term paper.
• You must Include one figure that summarizes Information from your term paper. A figure caption must be Included, and you must refer to the figure In the text (e.g. An overview is provided in Figure 1.).
• Note that the overall format of your paper Is up to you. You can use headings and subheadings to organize your paper if you like but it is not necessary.
Specific details:
• Your term paper should be based on 2 to 3 main recent (no earlier than 2015) primary research articles.
• You should have a total of 8.10 references. These can be primary research articles, review articles, books or book chapters, but not websites. You can use whatever reference format you like but be consistent
• You must include a title page with the following information: thoughtful and appropriate title, names and student numbers of authors.
• This term paper should be 3000 to 5000 words excluding figures, tables, and references.
