Write a pre-show curtain speech

Assignment task: In this activity, I'd like you to imagine that Saint Leo is putting on a production of Anna in the Tropics and you are in charge of welcoming the audience. To do this, you will make a list of theatre etiquette that you think the audience should adhere to, and then you will present a 30-second - two-minute speech on Flipgrid. Reminder: Flipgrid instructions are in Module 1.

Every stage production starts with a pre-show curtain speech that helps to welcome the audience and establish rules for how the audience should behave. As you learned in the Live Session, you'll need to use good diction, pacing, and vocal tone to make sure people understand the rules and feel welcome.

  • Write a pre-show curtain speech between 30 seconds and two minutes in length.
  • Start the speech by telling people a little about the play they're about to see.
  • Continue the speech with the rules the audience should follow during the performance. Make sure that at least one of your rules addresses cell phone usage.
  • Practice giving the speech with different pacing, vocal tone, and diction.
  • When you're ready, post your speech to Flipgrid.
  • Watch your classmate's videos and leave at least one positive review of another classmate's speech in comment form.
