IMAGINE that Mars is open for settlement and governments across the world are trying to encourage settlers to brave the journey. There are many inherent risks. The United States has decided to grant only three preliminary charters. The recipients of these charters will be granted to the top three proposals submitted by each group. A committee has been established to select the most promising groups for settlement. Their selection will be based on the commitment of the settlers, the ability to find funding, and a solid plan of local government. What would your proposal for a new colony be? In order to receive full credit you must write a paragraph about your new colony including what the purpose will be (what does your perfect world look like?), how it will be funded (joint stock? sole proprietor? government funded?), and how it will be governed (one leader? representatives? how will they be chosen? who gets to vote?) Guiding Questions What will the purpose of your colony be? How will you fund the colony? How will you ensure that the colonists are protected from one another? What structure will you put in place for the establishment of new laws?
