Problem
You're the assistant to the personnel manager of a metals fabrication plant. Monday is Labor Day, and most of the 300 employees will be given a paid holiday. The company is under pressure, however, to meet a deadline. Therefore, a skeleton force of forty-all in the production department-will be needed to work on the holiday. Those who volunteer will have the option of being paid overtime at the standard time-anda-half rate or receiving two vacation days. If fewer than forty employees volunteer, others will be assigned to work on the basis of seniority, with the most recently hired employees chosen first.
Your Task: The personnel manager has asked you to alert affected employees. Write a memo to the staff in the production department informing them about the Labor Day plans.
Tone: You want to sound reasonable, understandable, and professional.
Level of Information: You need to be clear about the situation by including enough information about the situation. What does the receiver need to know?
Audience: Envision your audience; think about to whom you are writing.
Purpose: What do you need to accomplish?
