Formal Description of Art 1 -- Write a brief formal description of a work of art.
You will write a 200-word, double-spaced description of a work of art that is illustrated in chapters 26 and 27 of Kleiner. You will describe the formal elements of the work: the use of color, value, line, shape, space, and texture etc. from the Art Elements listed on page nine of this syllabus. Focus on two main elements and note them in a topic sentence/thesis statement.
You are expected to do more than list the colors or call the piece dark: How do the formal elements interact?
Can you describe how formal choices influence how the viewer is intended to respond?
Are there recognizable symbols that you respond to?
We are not interested, at this point, in what the object means. Push yourself to get beyond liking or disliking and whether you think the object is beautiful or not.
Proper use of academic English and formatting are expected. The assignment must be typed and spell-checked before you turn it in. Please identify the work of art, with a page reference..
The emphasis for this assignment will be on observation, vocabulary, and communication. You will need to identify traits, rank them in a hierarchy, and explain in a clear and concise manner how they interact. do not do research, just make your best estimate of the history of the time).
