Assignment Task: Bonaparte is a retired army general who is tormented by guilt about all the death, cruelty, and destruction he has caused over the years. As one of the spoils of war, he has come to possess a time machine that enables him to travel backwards in time. To cure his torment, Bonaparte decides to use this machine to travel back to his younger self and kill himself painlessly in his sleep, to prevent the horrific carnage to come.
Explain what David Lewis (1976: 149-51) would say about this time travel case: can Bonaparte kill himself? Does the possibility of auto-infanticide render time travel incoherent? Why/why not?
