Problem: Should Couples Stay Together
Should parents with marital problems stay together for the children? It is clear that a wide variety of child and adolescent problems are associated with marital discord and divorce. Would you stay together for the children if you were in a troubled marriage? Would it be better to divorce in order to insulate the children from conflict? Would divorcing eliminate child exposure to conflict? Can children be insulated from conflict without divorcing? Or should the focus be on reducing conflict? Some states have considered making waiting periods to secure a divorce when minor children are involved. Is that a good idea? Does the state have an interest in families that warrants such an intrusive measure?
