Assignment: Nicomachean Ethics / Crito
Answer one of the following questions. Your answer should be at least five double-spaced pages long. Title your essay with the number of the question that you are answering - you do not need to repeat the question in your essay. As always, essays will be assessed based on clarity, understanding of the material, and strength of your argument.
1) In book one of the Ethics, Aristotle says that the highest good for people is philosophy, since reason is the unique function of human beings. But there are other things that humans do that other animals don't. Why didn't Aristotle say that the highest happiness for human beings comes from cooking, and that all the proper virtues should be cooking-related? Could Aristotle respond to this objection? If so, how?
2) Using what Aristotle says in book 8 and 9 about friendship, would he say that Socrates and Crito are friends? Answer this question based only on what we see in the Crito.
3) Using what Aristotle says about the virtues in book two (and elsewhere) of the Ethics, would Aristotle say that Socrates as we see him in the Critowas virtuous?
