The Question of Origin
The origin of Hinduism is largely unknown. However, historians' research derives their origin to nearly 5000 years ago. The name Hindu derives its identity from river Indus that streams through northern India. Persians, who migrated to India renamed River "Sindhu" as Hindu. As a result, the land inhabited by Hindustan and Hindus led to naming of their religion as Hinduism (Beversluis, 2000). Hinduism is deemed to be the oldest religion since the civilization of mankind. Historians and past scholars believe that Hinduism is not a unilateral religion, but a fusion of different Indian cultures like historical Vedic religion that is a product of the Indo-Aryan and Harappan cultures (Klostermaier, 2007).
