Assignment task: Respond to this discussion post: My chosen article is called "World Aquaculture: Environmental Impacts and Troubleshooting Alternatives". Written by Marcel Martinez-Porchas and Luis Martinez-Cordova, they bring up issues concerning the environmental impact that certain aquaculture systems have, as well as their impact on the economy wherever they are placed. Their provided information throughout the article is based on fact, pulling documents from experts such as Oxford University press out of New York, The World Aquaculture Society and many more. As their article covers the impacts on local environment, I strongly agree with the title of their article. While the guidelines in terms of sustainability, which is meeting current needs without sacrifice the needs and stability of the future, the article provides evidence of such impacts. For example, Marcel and Luis state that the construction of these sustainable aquaculture systems destroys already occurring, natural ecosystems, putting into question the pros and cons over the system. Would placing this structure be necessary? Is it being placed in an area with a sensitive balance, perhaps with endangered species? This is a common struggle for organizations/companies that attempt to build such systems, as some of these structures get built in semi-popular areas that have visual appeal, or even property that decreases in value.
