Without the literary and artistic developments of the 14th and 15th centuries, would the religious reforms of the 16th have been possible? Without the political development of the earlier centuries, would the events of these later centuries have been possible? And why did religious reform have to end in a long, brutal war (est. 8,000,000 dead by some scholars)? Was that politics or religion...?
