Problem
Marj is an efficient surgical nurse, known to "get the job done." She is also your best friend. You have been through a lot together and she has always "been there" for you. Working alone with her one night, you overhear her speaking rudely to an elderly client. She is not aware you have overheard the conversation.
Task
Decide the direction your conversation will take.
1) Will you advocate for the patient or for the family member?
2) As a practical nurse, are you a patient advocate?
3) Are there times when you should advocate for the patient's best interests, even though this conflicts with their wishes?
4) As an advocate, what is the best route to take-speak to the doctor, approach your union representative or advocacy group, talk to your supervisor, solve the problem yourself, talk to your member of parliament or another approach?
