Why you think we are not particularly sensitive to shadows

Assignment: Vision and Art

Part one - Write a response paragraph (Around 200-250 words)

(Only use what I gave you for source, no other exist sources...please write a own word)

As we've discussed, some artists wish for "unmediated perception". They wish to perceive the visual world as it is, without interference from knowledge and assumptions. This drives them to look closely at, for example the pattern of light falling on an object.
Watch the youtube video: "Shading Light and Form - Basics" of an artist explaining shadows and shading.

Question: You've observed shadows millions of times. Did this artist help you see something you've missed? If so, why do you think you'd never noticed that aspect of shadows? The artist described altering shadows to achieve an enhanced sense of depth. What did he do and why did he do it? How can he get away with it: why don't we notice something is wrong? In general, why do you think we aren't particularly sensitive to shadows and shading?

Part two- Checkpoint Question (Around 30-40 words)

Question: Use the background material to explain this illusion. (Use several observations from the background material about what we notice and what we don't notice about shadows.) If you don't perceive the illusion, use the link below to see other examples of the hovering illusion.
