Problem: Nutrition Scavenger Hunt
Using products you have at home or from a pharmacy complete the following worksheet. Products chosen should be easily found and verified, or a picture of the product should be provided. If there is not a specific brand name to the product just indicate who manufactures it (i.e. Nature Made, store brand). Provide a reference to where the products were found.
I. Define what DRI means and how that might impact how we interpret a label.
II. Iron is often used when someone has a decrease in blood due to anemia, dialysis, or hemorrhage. Find a product that provides at least 65 mg of elemental iron.
i. What is the name of the product?
ii. What form of iron does it contain?
iii. How many tablets/capsules would you need to take in order to achieve the suggested dose?
iv. Why would an iron source also contain vitamin C?
v. Name two other iron salts and name a product they are found in.
III. Woman over 50 should take 1200 mg of elemental calcium a day. Find a product with at least 250 mg of elemental calcium per dose.
i. What is the name of the product?
ii. What form of calcium does it contain?
iii. How many tablets/capsules would a female need to take in order to achieve the RDA?
iv. Why would a source of calcium also contain Vitamin D?e. Name two other calcium salts and name a product they are found in.
IV. Find an over the counter product that contains zinc. What is the name of the product and what is it used for?
V. Find a B-Complex vitamin.
i. What is the name of the product?
ii. How much of each B vitamin does it contain?
iii. Are there any other active ingredients in the product? If so what are they and why do you think they were added?
VI. Vitamin D has been in the spotlight for the last several years. We know it prevents rickets, but that isn't a common condition in the industrialized world.
i. What might someone be using Vitamin D for in the US? (Remember to utilize a reputable source for this information.
ii. What is the recommended dose to treat that condition?
iii. Find a product that contains enough Vitamin D for the above dose. It may need to be an Rx.
