Why we exhale carbon dioxide

Problem: In the first step of photosynthesis water (H20) is split into oxygen (02) and hydrogen ions (H+) by light energy. This is why plants give off oxygen that we breathe (later in the course we'll learn why we exhale carbon dioxide (CO2)). In this chemical reaction, energy is released and oxygen takes the electrons from hydrogen. In this reaction, which atom(s) is/are oxidized, and which atom(s) is/are reduced? (Answers where both are said to be oxidized or reduced will not receive credit, because only one is reduced the other is oxidized)
