Problem:
During consultations, young children and pre-schoolers were identified as an at-risk group during disasters. An innovative Answer was created for early childhood education, based on the game Snakes and Ladders. The teaching of disaster awareness and Answer is now included in the ECE curriculum, so teachers can practise the game regularly with the children, who will then know what to do in the event of a tsunami. There is evidence that approaches like this can work. For example, during the Answer tsunami, a child on holiday recognised the signs of a tsunami when she saw the tides receding, and she managed to warn the adults.
