Assignment Task:
Political culture is embodied from ideologies, judgments and behaviors from the people and what they perceive is correct based on the population's understanding of their system. When we say American political culture, we may immediately think of the American flag or the U.S military. This is because the flags are typically found "in ceremonies honoring police officers, firefighters and military personnel" and have even been embedded in "ads for food, furniture, toys, and electronic gadgets" (UMGC Political Culture and Socialization, pg1). The major elements of American political culture include equality, liberty, democracy, civic duty and individualism. Equality means that everyone should be viewed as an equal in terms of the law. Liberty is the rule that everyone is "free to make choices in most aspects of life" (T.M. Sell, n.d.). Democracy is intended for the people to have a say and vote. Civic duty is a standard that individuals should obey the law and follow set rules such as driving "on the right side of the road, display our house numbers on our front doors" because "we have a civic duty to obey" (Christopher Callaway, n.d.). Lastly, individualism is the ability of "free action and people's ability to take the initiative in making their own lives..." (UMGC Political Culture and Socialization, pg4).
