Equal Protection

The bias treatment between male teacher/female student and female teacher/male student is unjust. Yearly, there are cases where teachers whose sexual contact with students come to light. "Historically, statutory rape laws in this country were established to protect young females from adult male predators" (Stennis, 2006, p. 398). When a male teacher has inappropriate sexual contact with a female student, the male most likely will serve a lengthy jail sentence and may have to register as a sex offender. On the other hand, when a female teacher has inappropriate contact with a male student, there may be a fine to pay, a no contact order in place, but no jail time or registration as a sex offender. Such situations leaves the male victims unprotected from equal rights. "However, the need to recognize a female's criminal negligence of having sex with a young man, historically, has not been enforced in the courts or state legislatures" (Stennis, 2006, p. 399). This is considered unequal protection. Female educators should be held accountable just as equally as male educators for having sexual contact with students.
