Assignment task:
In 2015, the Canadian government, at the time led by a majority-Conservative government, introduced and passed Bill S-7, the controversially-named "Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Cultural Practices" bill. As the name suggests, this bill attempted to outlaw what it was calling "Barbaric Cultural Practices" - which according to the bill included a list of practices largely targeted at immigrants and refugees in Canada. This link briefly outlines the ideas behind the bill.
However, as the additional links below indicate, this bill was met with significant backlash and criticism by Canadians who objected to the phrase "Barbaric Cultural Practices", and the troubling implications of this phrase. What exactly is a "Barbaric Cultural Practice"? And what is being targeted and scrutinized in this bill's targeting of "culture"? The "cultural practices" targeted by this bill are all things already covered under Canadian criminal law. So critics questioned what the purpose was of such a bill. Moreover, critics questioned how this bill, without explicitly stating it, was focused on stereotypes racialized immigrant communities in Canada. Many critics argued the bill was implicitly racist.
