Discussion Question
For me, one of the main takeaways is understanding that when an ACL is set up, it is imperative to understand the order of commands. As stated in the video when setting up the ACL you should put yourself in the place of the packet a. Where are you at b. Where are you going and c. How do you get there? The other interesting point brought up in the video was the wildcard mask. The wildcard mask needs to be set as the opposite of the subnet mask. For example, if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, then the wildcard mask should be 0.0.0.255. If you want to specify a specific IP address, then the wildcard mask would be 0.0.0.0. It is important to remember wildcard mask is a sequence of numbers that enhance packet routing within the subnets of that network. So when a packet arrives at the gateway that packet is routed to its destination using a subnet number. The wildcard mask is a strand of binary digits shown over the subnet number, telling the router which parts of the subnet number to use.
Class, I want you to think about wildcard mask further.
1. Why is this concept difficult to wrap your head around sometimes and what, in your own words, can you share to help those that may be challenged?
