Why is this couple sitting outside, in the heat and with the flies, instead of inside, where it is cool, and they are protected from the flies? Of the characteristics of Modernism that I list, which two do you think this story most embodies? Explain your choices. Why does "The American" have no name? Can you find any other instance of "two-ness" in the story that is significant?
