Why is access to clean food and water a human right

Assignment Task:

You will need to look for a scenario where there is a deficit of clean water and/or healthy food in a community. Once you have found an article, report, or other media source about your chosen scenario, you will work through identifying the players, problems, and solutions for the issue with an eye for the biological aspects of the problem. Using your understanding of osmosis, diffusion, and cell respiration to address problems of food and water scarcity in our society.

Osmosis: a process by which molecules of a solvent tend to pass through a semipermeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, thus equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane.

Diffusion: movement of higher concentration to low concentration

Cell respiration: a metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose and produces ATP

Question: Why is access to clean food and water a human right?

For the sake's of their lives and well-being.

Scenario: Life after war began? Or current living situation? Middle class?

What community is being affected by scarcity? How is it affecting their health as well-being?

People in the middle class are being affected because they do not qualify to be considered lower class or higher class. The lower class is considered under poverty and qualifies for government-state help. The higher class can afford everything plus extra. The middle-class struggle to make ends meet.  The reason the middle class is more affected because they do not qualify for government help nor have extra money to afford healthy food. Middle-class work 40+ hours a week to afford rent, bills, commute to and from work, and necessities. With the money left over, they can afford very little food. The amount you can get for little money is unhealthy food like store-bought mixes and frozen dinners. Organic food is deemed more expensive to afford therefore cannot afford to make a healthy meal.

Is there a scientific reason for this scarcity? If so, how so? If not, how not? Can it be fixed?

There is no scientific evidence behind this. This is a government program created to help those in poverty. This can be fixed by considering the living situation of every citizen. Prices need to go down in order to be able to afford the necessities for everyone to live healthy.

Who has the ability to fix, mitigate, or profit off of the scarcity? How? Why?

The government has the power to mitigate this as this is regarding every citizen of the world.

How can we as a society improve access to clean water and healthy food?

Government can provide filtering systems to sinks in order to access clean water. As for food, prices for groceries can be lowered.
