Why do zebras have black and white stripes

Question: Why do Zebras have black and white stripes? Hypothesis 1: Most predators see in colour, not black and white. Hypothesis 2: Stripes make zebras look slimmer, so less desirable to hunt. Hypothesis 3: Giraffes and leopards already filled the role for large spotted animals in Africa, making stripes the Zebras' only choice. Which Hypothesis Standards do each Hypothesis fail, if any?
