CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS- CLASSIFICATION OF SPECIES
1. Why do people need a universal system of naming organisms?
2. Suppose you found two species of cave dwelling lizards without eyes living on opposite
sides of the world. Explain how you would try to determine if the two species were
closely related.
3. The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle created a taxonomic organization system. In this
system he divided organisms into two groups, plants and animals. He then divided the
animals into three groups based on how they moved; walking, flying or swimming.
Using this system name two animals that would fit into each group. Discuss problems
with this three group system and explain how the problem(s) could be addressed.
