Why do cells want a plasma membrane

All life forms on Earth exist either as a single cell or as collections of cells which have a plasma membrane at their periphery (although some cells encompass cell walls outside their plasma membrane). Explain why do you think the plasma membrane exists in all living things? Why aren't there living things that do not encompass a membrane at their periphery?
