When speaking of ideology during this past election season, many candidates used the word 'socialism' as a political weapon to scare voters into not supporting the opposing candidate. This strategy strangely worked as many people incorrectly equated socialism with communism or wrongly assumed that socialism leads directly or indirectly to communism. In a nation where it's Founding Father's established socialism with the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 and we have socialist police and fire departments and school systems and also enjoy the socialist benefits of unemployment insurance, why did this tactic prove to be so successful?
