Problem
After examining the multitude of terrors faced by African Americans in the 20 years following Reconstruction, migration out of the South seemed like the best option for those looking to flee violence and disenfranchisement. Whether it was to the Midwest and Great Plains, urban areas within the South, or leaving the country entirely, Black folks were leaving the South en masse. Based on the migration patterns we observed in this chapter, which of these provided the best opportunities for African American advancement and survival? Why was this the best option?
