Which of the following would make you popular among your

Quantitative Data Analysis Project

In Chapter 6 of your text, you read about the steps involved in the data analysis process. Attached you will find a sample data set (note: I have attached the data both in a pdf file and an Excel file--for those of you that know how to use Excel, you might be able to calculate your statistics using this program).

This data was collected from students in grades 4-6. Each student was asked the following question:

Which of the following would make you popular among your friends? Rank in order.

A. Make good grades

B. Having lots of money

C. Being good at sports

D. Being handsome or pretty

Students were also asked whether good grades, athletic ability, or popularity was most important to them personally.

Your job is to analyze this data. Follow these steps in your analysis:

Step 1: Preparing the Data for Analysis

The data, as they are presented have gone through some preparation for analysis.

a. Describe what additional preparation could be done. Specifically, which of these variables could be coded? How would you choose to code them, if you were the researcher?

b. Would you describe these data as single scores, summed scores, or difference scores? Explain.

Step 2: Analyze the Data

Provide some results for descriptive statistics using this data by answering the following questions (if you are not using formulas in Excel, feel free to use calculators or other statistical programs--you are NOT required to do any calculations by hand!):

1. What is the mean rank for the good grades option?

2. What is the mean rank for the money option?

3. What is the mean rank for the sports option?

4. What is the mean rank for the looks option?

5. How many females ranked grades as most important? money? sports? looks?

6. How many males ranked grades as most important? money? sports? looks?

7. Calculate at least two additional descriptive statistics of your choice (think about a breakdown of data that you think would be interesting).

8. Think about inferential statistics. Discuss one inferential statistic that might be useful for this data set. What information could you obtain by running your chosen statistic?

Step 3: Report the Results

Using tables, figures, and/or explanations, report your calculated results from above.

Step 4: Interpret the Results

Summarize your findings. Explain your results. Make recommendations based on the findings.
