Question: This is Black Studies art and music class!
Essay Question: Which musician, artist, writer, etc. from our readings (Soul of a Nation, "Soul Music," etc.) or a contemporary has Soul? What is Soul? How is it manifested in the art, music, and/or performance of the person you have picked? Where does her or his Soul come from?
I am focusing on Mary J Blige and how she represents soul music and has Soul: eventeen years ago, Mary J. Blige shook up the world of R&B when she released the record My Life. It ushered in a new sound: soul music over hip-hop beats. Instantly, Blige became known as the queen of hip-hop soul.
Guidelines: Your paper should be 3-5 pages. It should be typed, double-spaced, neat, and clearly written. It should contain a bibliography and footnotes of sources you use in your paper. Footnotes can appear at the bottom of each page or as endnotes in a numbered list at the back of the paper. Papers will be graded in terms of clarity of argument, use of evidence to back up your argument, and the aesthetics of your presentation of your argument in the paper.
