BRIEF ARTICLE EXPLANATION: State governments must report on their compliance with the 4 core protections of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act in order to continue to receive federal funding for their criminal justice programs. The link above is New Jersey's report on Racial and Ethnic Disparity, which was part of their application for the 2019 funding. In the report, you will find data about racial and ethnic disparity rates at four of the key decision points: arrest; diversion to a community program instead of juvenile court; placement in a juvenile detention center before trial; and dispositional commitment, which is a period of incarceration ordered at the sentencing phase). There is also an action plan for addressing these inequities.
