Problem
Four main types of legislation affect compensation systems. First, every province has an employment standards act, which sets minimum standards for wages; hours of work; termination benefits; and vacation, statutory holiday, and leave entitlements, as well as the minimum age for employment. (The equivalent federal legislation is known as the Canada Labour Code.) Second, all jurisdictions have human rights acts, which prohibit employment discrimination based on factors such as gender, ethnicity, and age. Some jurisdictions also have specific pay equity legislation, which is aimed at redressing past pay inequities experienced by female employees.
