The Dilemma

David is in his third year of teaching social studies at Thunder High School. As a member of the staff, David is a private individual, and does a good job in the classroom. His students perform well in class and on standardized tests.

During the spring parent-teacher conferences held in the school cafeteria, Janet, David's department coordinator, notices an extended conversation between David and a mother. It seems to be a friendly but lengthy conversation. Janet makes a note to check in with David later.

At the close of conferences, Janet notices the mother is still in the cafeteria. The mother approaches David again as he leaves the cafeteria. They share some short conversation, some quiet laughter, and then part.

Janet walks out with David, and asks if all is okay with the mother. David nervously says all is good-she was just concerned about her son. Janet responds that she seemed to leave happy, and David nods in agreement.

The next morning, during mutual unscheduled time, David asks to meet privately with Janet. He then confides that, for the last 4 months, he has been in a dating relationship with the mother Janet observed last night.
