Discussion Post: Spectacles in Asia
To date, we have covered several different definitions of "spectacle." Guy Debord, for instance, argues that spectacle is a social relation among people mediated by images. Gennifer Weisenfeld, however, claims that spectacle is what imbues a viewing experience with emotion. Using direct reference to the course readings and specific examples from the audio-visual materials, compare and contrast at least two different definitions of spectacle. Which conceptualization of "spectacle" is most compelling and best supported by the primary "texts" that we have covered thus far in class?
